Blog2024 MLB: Betting Trends, and the High Margins Delivered by Huddle’s SGP
Discover how the Los Angeles Dodgers' 2024 World Series triumph and Shohei Ohtani's record-breaking season shaped MLB betting trends. Explore the high-margin success of Huddle’s Same Game Parlay (SGP) product and its impact on operators' profitability.
The 2024 MLB Season proved to be one for the ages, culminating in a dream World Series matchup between two baseball powerhouses - the Los Angeles Dodgers taking on the New York Yankees. If you’re a fan of star power, this series had it in spades. Shohei Ohtani and Aaron Judge. Mookie Betts and Juan Soto. Gerrit Cole and Freddie Freeman.
The Dodgers ended up on top in an oddly quick World Series, featuring some incredible performances from Freddie Freeman and Mookie Betts, and some pretty enormous letdowns from Aaron Judge and Juan Soto.
Ohtani, who admittedly did not have a particularly inspiring World Series, still had an otherworldly season, in which he:
- Became the inaugural member of the 50 HR/50 SB club
- Posted a career high in home runs, runs batted in, doubles, stolen bases, hits and runs
- Set the Dodgers franchise record for single-season HR
- Made his first career postseason appearance
- Won the NL MVP
- Won the World Series
From a betting perspective, this season was a huge success for Huddle. Two-leg bets were the most common, comprising 32% of all Bet Builders - with common selections being plate-appearance result and pitch outcome. Additional popular bets included run handicaps, over/unders on total runs scored, and player specific metrics like strikeouts and home runs.
Unsurprisingly, as the odds of the bets success increased from 4.0 upwards, we saw a frequency of the bet gradually decreasing. Bettors are less willing to take on higher risks associated with longer odds.
Most users were comfortable with selections in the six hours leading up to the game, though we had a significant number of bettors partaking in live in-play betting situations. Home run betting markets showed increased popularity, in no doubt due to Shohei Ohtani and Aaron Judge both posting historic home run seasons. In some ways, it was fitting for sportsbooks that those two faced off in the World Series, after contributing significantly to handle for wagers during the season.
