BlogJake’s Takes: Olympic Basketball Showdown, Predictions and Insights
The world's top basketball teams are set to compete for gold in a thrilling display of athleticism and strategy. The men's basketball tournament at the Olympics is always a highlight, showcasing elite talent and fierce competition. This year, twelve teams have their sights set on glory, divided into three groups to battle it out on the hardwood.
Let's break down the tournament format for those who might need a quick refresher:
Group Stage:
- Group A: Australia, Canada, Greece, and Spain
- Group B: France, Germany, Brazil, and Japan
- Group C: United States, Serbia, South Sudan, and Puerto Rico
Each team plays every other team in their group once. The top two teams from each group, based on their records, will advance to the quarterfinals. Additionally, the top two third-place teams across all groups will also move forward.
Quarterfinals: The advancing teams enter a knockout stage, where they are drawn into matchups under two conditions:
- The two highest-ranked teams are placed on opposite sides of the bracket.
- Teams cannot face opponents they previously played in the group stage.
From the quarterfinals, it’s a single-elimination format. Losers in the quarterfinal round are eliminated, while semifinal losers will compete for the bronze medal.
As the excitement builds, here are my predictions for the first six men's basketball games of the Olympics. Stay tuned to see which teams rise to the occasion and which ones face early exits in their quest for Olympic glory.
Jake's Predictions
- Australia vs. Spain (Winner: Australia)- I don’t think this Spain team is as good as some might expect them to be, and I think Australia might be better. They have a host of NBA-talent on their roster, from veterans like Matthew Dellavadova and Patty Mills (who boasts the sixth most points scored in Olympic history) to young talent like Dyson Daniels, Josh Giddey and Josh Green. I expect a balanced scoring effort led by Mills, with enough defense provided by big men Jock Landale and Will Magnay.
- Germany vs. Japan (Winner: Germany) - Germany is good. They just threatened Team USA in their final exhibition game to the point where LeBron James had to bail out the boys in red, white, and blue. Brothers Franz and Mo Wagner are complemented nicely by Dennis Shroder and Daniel Theis, and this group has surprisingly good chemistry. Do they have a star like France, Canada, Greece, or the USA? No. But this squad is familiar with each other and has excellent synergy. That matters.
- France vs. Brazil (Winner: France) - Another defensive force of nature is France. Led by Victor Wembanyama (reigning NBA Rookie of the Year) and Rudy Gobert (reigning Defensive Player of the Year), it’s going to be difficult to score in the paint against France. This team is also loaded with dangerous perimeter defenders like Nic Batum and Bilal Coulibaly. The other immensely important detail? They’re the host nation, and fans ought to be raucous.
- Greece vs. Canada (Winner: Canada) - Why am I betting on Canada when Greece employs Giannis Antetokounmpo, who is, at worst, a top-5 player in the world? Canada is deeper, has probably the best backcourt in the entire tournament (Jamal Murray and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander), and also features one of the best on-ball defenders in basketball (Lu Dort).
- South Sudan vs. Puerto Rico (Winner: South Sudan) - This group of South Sudanese pros is playing with house money, and that makes them dangerous against Puerto Rico. They don’t have much in terms of NBA talent, but Carlik Jones was a great college guard, Wenyen Gabriel was a highly touted recruit, and this team does have a lot of two-way capable players. They don’t have a superstar, or even just a regular star, but they play hard every night.
- Serbia vs. United States (Winner: USA) - While Team USA has looked less than impressive in four out of its five exhibition games, they’re still the prohibitive favorite. LeBron James is a top-2 basketball player… ever. Stephen Curry is the greatest shooter of all-time. Bam Adebayo and Anthony Davis are perhaps the most terrifying defensive frontcourt in recent memory in the Olympics. Shooting and defensive versatility define the 2024 iteration of Team USA. Despite Serbia featuring Nikola Jokic, Team USA should be too well-rounded – and that doesn’t even include Team USA’s all-time leading scorer, Kevin Durant, who has yet to suit up.
Huddle Trader Predictions
- Australia vs Spain (Winner: Australia) - Australia has never defeated Spain in a major competition, but this time, things will change. On paper, this is practically an even match-up; however, Australia has looked better throughout the pre-Olympic period. Additionally, their dynamic NBA guards Giddey, Green, and Daniels will give the Spaniards plenty of trouble.
- Germany vs Japan (Winner: Germany) - The current world champions have nothing to gain in this match, as anything other than a win with a significant point difference would be a moral loss and could significantly impact their progress in the Olympic tournament.
- France vs Brazil (Winner: France) - Croatian coach Aco Petrovic successfully led Brazil to the Olympics, relying on the 41-year-old Marcelo Huertas, who is playing some of the best basketball of his career in these late years. However, France has its veterans (De Colo, Batum, Fournier) and Victor Wembanyama. They will seek a good start to the tournament on home soil, which is only possible with a victory against Brazil, especially after three consecutive losses leading up to the Olympic tournament.
- Greece vs Canada (Winner: Canada) - Although Greece has relatively dominantly secured its place in the Olympic tournament and traditionally represents one of the world's basketball powerhouses, and has one of the best non-American players in the world, Canada comes to this tournament with practically a full squad, led by last season's NBA MVP candidate Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. While this match-up should be one of the most exciting of the first round on paper, in reality, it isn't, given that Canada currently has a much higher-quality roster.
- South Sudan vs Puerto Rico (Winner: Puerto Rico) - Although South Sudan has garnered sympathy with their phenomenal game against the USA, which they lost by one point (101-100), Puerto Rico is a more basketball-talented team that gets the edge in close games against less experienced opponents. This is especially true considering that they are in a group with Serbia and the USA, making this their only real chance for a win in the Olympic tournament.
- Serbia vs USA (Winner: USA) - In what is currently the biggest basketball classic in the world, the American Dream Team Vol. 3 faces the Serbian national team in the first round of the group stage. Led by the world's best basketball player of recent years, Serbia will try to make things difficult for the top favorites of the Olympic tournament. The difference in the quality of the overall roster is significant, but if anyone has the quality to create a miracle against the USA, it's Jokic's Serbia.
Whether it's Australia’s bid to overcome Spain, Germany's quest for dominance, or the potential showdown between Serbia and the USA, the stage is set for thrilling basketball action starting tomorrow.
