SGP Challenge Week 3: Beat The Huddle Trader

After landing a +469 SGP last week, Huddle trader Graham Eversden took the lead over Jake Moszkowski in our SGP picks challenge!

Using Huddle's brand new SGP product, combining micro-markets, props and totals, Graham took home a nice wager on last week's TNF... can he do the same this week and keep up the heater?

Both Graham and Jake give their picks below for the Thursday Night Football game between the 49ers vs Giants.

I’ll give credit to Graham. Not only did he beat me in our Week 2 H2H SGP for Thursday Night Football, but he did so by picking the over on our shared wager, whereas I went with the under.

Well, Thursday football has rolled around again, and we’ll once again be going head-to-head in a matchup.

The New York Giants are off to a rough start to the 2023 NFL season. Daniel Jones, fresh off signing a 4-year, $160M extension, has looked … not great. The Giants were thrashed by the Dallas Cowboys in Week 1, and needed a sizable comeback to beat the Arizona Cardinals, a team expected to be picking first overall in the next NFL Draft. The Giants have to play the San Francisco 49ers in Week 3, a team I’ve picked to finish first in the NFC… and the Giants will likely head into this matchup without the services of their star running back, Saquon Barkley, who is expected to miss multiple games with an ankle injury.

I’ll gladly take the 49ers money line, as I flat out think they’re the better team. With the expectation that the Giants will fall behind early and struggle to run against a superb 49ers run defense, I think Daniel Jones will be forced to throw early and often. I’m not saying he’ll be super efficient, but I expect him to throw upwards of 40 times. I’ll take Jones O202.5 passing yards. I also think the 49ers boast the best linebacking core in all of football, spearheaded by Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw. I’ll also bet Jones U39.5 rushing yards.

With my expectation that the 49ers will be up big, expect star 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey to get at least 20-25 carries. I’ll take McCaffrey O77.5 rushing yards.

Odds: +999

Graham Eversden's SGP Pick

Current SGP Picks challenge ROI: +4.69

The Giants are off to a rough start this year but I like them to bounce back on Thursday and compete with the 49ers, especially early in the game. I think the game starts slow and sloppy, and the Giants keep the 1st half close in a low scoring affair. I think the Giants defense will be able to cause more problems for the 49ers passing game than any team so far, and Purdy will fall short of 230 yards passing. The 49ers are clearly the better team, but I think the Giants put up an encouraging performance for the first time this season.

Odds: +323

Well, we have a winner from my head-to-head SGP matchup with Huddle Trader Graham Eversden, and I’m sad to say it wasn’t me. I was unable to beat the trader due to the offensive explosion provided by Vikings WR Justin Jefferson. Perhaps I was too overconfident in the lockdown abilities of Eagles CB Darius Slay. I felt like Jefferson could be held under 90 yards, yet he went off for 11 receptions and 159 yards.

Otherwise, my other three projections (Dallas Goedert U39.5 receiving yards, T.J. Hockenson O49.5 receiving yards, Eagles moneyline) all hit. Graham went an impressive 4/4, buoyed by his over prediction on Justin Jefferson’s receiving yards. He also hit on the O49, Eagles 1H winner, and Kirk Cousins over for passing yards.

Ironically, one of the more wild trading moments in this game involved a play that helped Graham’s SGP stay alive. Let me set the scene:

  • The Vikings were trailing 10-7 with a minute left in the first half
  • Justin Jefferson caught a deep pass from Kirk Cousins near the end zone
  • Jefferson stretched out towards the pylon in hopes of scoring a touchdown, but lost control of the ball
  • The result? A touchback and turnover on downs as the ball rolled into the end zone

That turnover helped preserve Graham’s wager on an Eagles 1H winner, as it helped set up Eagles kicker Jake Elliott’s 61-yard field goal to extend Philadelphia’s lead to 13-7 at the intermission. Given the Vikings only lost by 6 points, that 10-point swing had a huge impact for bettors.

I’m already looking forward to Thursday Night Football for Week 3 - a chance for me to avenge my H2H “loss” to Graham in a game between the New York Giants and the San Francisco 49ers.
